First returns in L.A. County races show Kuehl, Prang, Prop P leading

Early mail-in ballots have given Sheila Kuehl a slight lead Tuesday evening in her race against Bobby Shriver for the 3rd District seat being vacated by Zev Yaroslavsky on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

The 73-year-old former state lawmaker garnered 51% of the vote, but with only a small percentage of precincts reporting. Former Santa Monica City Councilman Shriver, 60, had 49%.

In the county assessor contest, Jeffrey Prang, a special assistant in the assessor’s office, held a slightly higher lead -- about 52% -- over the about 47% received by opponent John Morris, a head deputy to the Los Angeles County district attorney.

Meanwhile, Proposition P, a $23 parcel tax for Los Angeles County parks, received about 61% in favor, but it will need at least 66% -- a two-thirds majority -- for passage.

With the polls having closed at 8 p.m., election officials say they will release more results as they are received and tabulated at the registrar-recorder’s office in Norwalk.
