The Durfee fire, near Whittier Narrows, is stopped at two acres

Los Angeles County firefighters stopped a small brush fire Monday afternoon in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, holding it to two acres despite high temperatures and wind.

The Durfee fire started in the 1600 block of North Rosemead Boulevard about 3:30 p.m. and prompted a first-alarm brush response from the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

In a large, initial attack, the firefighting effort involved several engines, bulldozers and aircraft. Firefighters faced temperatures in the 90s with light west winds to 10 mph, according to the National Weather Service office in Oxnard. The fire was contained by Monday evening.
